The home built for tall people

The standard heights every house is built to, the code minimums, and what to change when you build or renovate.

Houses are built to a set of standard heights: counters, doors, shower heads, light fixtures. Most of them are sized for an average body. When you’re building or renovating, every one of those numbers is a choice, and many of them cost little or nothing to change.

The standard heights

ElementTypical standard
Kitchen counter36 in
Bathroom sink (pedestal)32–36 in
Shower head77–81 in
Toilet seat17–19 in
Towel bar48 in
Interior door80 in (6 ft 8 in)
Ceiling8 ft typical; 9–10 ft in many newer homes

What the building code requires

The code sets minimums, not targets. Under the International Residential Code, which most US jurisdictions adopt in some form (IRC R305):

  • Living spaces and hallways: ceilings at least 7 ft.
  • Bathrooms and laundry rooms: at least 6 ft 8 in, with 6 ft 8 in of clearance above a 30 × 30 in area at the shower head.
  • Basement beams and ducts can come down to 6 ft 4 in.

Ceiling fans have their own rule: manufacturers require the blades to be at least 7 ft above the floor (fan installation manual). In a room with an 8 ft ceiling, that leaves very little room.

Your local code may differ, so check with your building department.

What to change when you build or renovate

  • Raise the counters. Delta notes that counter height can be customized for very tall homeowners (Delta). A few inches higher in the kitchen saves your back every day. Taller bathroom vanities, at the top of the 32–36 in range or above, help just as much.
  • Mount the shower head higher. In new construction it costs the same to put the outlet higher, or to add a slide bar so everyone in the house can set their own height.
  • Use taller doors where ceilings allow. With 9 to 10 ft ceilings, 8 ft doors look right and change how a house feels to walk through (Wayfair).
  • Keep walkways clear overhead. Use recessed lights or flush mounts over halls, stairs and doorways instead of hanging fixtures. Save pendants for over tables and islands.
  • Watch the basement. Beams and ducts at the 6 ft 4 in minimum are where tall people hit their heads. Plan duct runs high or inside soffits along walls.
  • Raise the towel bars and mirrors. Mount the mirror so its top sits well above your eye line.
