How to use these numbers

Start with the car you drive now. Look up its front headroom and legroom. If it’s tight, set the sliders an inch above it. That’s a better yardstick than your height, because torso length, leg length and how you like to sit vary a lot between people the same height.

Headroom and legroom are measured one way. Carmakers follow an industry standard (SAE J1100) with the seat in one position. It doesn’t show how low the seat drops or how far the wheel reaches, so use this to make a shortlist, then sit in the car.

For what to check on a test drive, and why the glass roof is the trap, read The tall driver’s car guide. Specs are for the model years shown and can change between trims and years.
