Bikes, gym gear and equipment for tall frames

Frame sizes, rower and treadmill limits, and what to check before you buy, so the gear fits the person using it.

Gym equipment and bikes are sized like clothes, except the size chart is harder to find and returns are harder to arrange. A bike that’s too small or a treadmill that’s too short won’t just feel cramped. It changes how you move. Here’s what to check.

Bikes: go by inseam, then ride it

Every bike brand publishes a size chart by rider height and inseam. Trek’s charts are a good example of how the largest sizes line up:

Trek bike and sizeRider heightInseam
Road, 60 cm6′0.8″–6′2.8″33.9–35.4 in
Road, 62 cm6′2.8″–6′4.8″35.0–36.2 in
Mountain, XL6′1.2″–6′5.2″34.3–36.2 in
Marlin, 2XL6′5.0″–6′8.0″36.0–38.0 in

The ranges overlap on purpose. Inseam matters more than overall height, and arm and torso length decide the rest. Measure your inseam (book between your legs, floor to spine), use the chart to narrow to one or two sizes, then test-ride both. A longer seatpost and a longer stem are common, cheap adjustments for tall riders.

Rowing machines: check the inseam limit

On a rower, your legs set the limit. Concept2’s RowErg, the most common machine in gyms, fits an inseam of up to 38 inches. Longer inseams need its extra-long monorail. It’s rated for users up to 500 lb in Concept2’s own testing (Concept2). If your knees hit the end of the rail at the catch, the machine is too short for you, not your technique.

Treadmills: deck length is everything

A tall runner has a longer stride, and a short belt makes you shorten it or risk stepping off the back. Garage Gym Reviews recommends a belt of at least 55 inches, ideally 60, for tall runners. Look for a motor of at least 2.5 CHP and a weight capacity of 300 lb or more (Garage Gym Reviews). Budget treadmills often have shorter decks, so this is the one place it pays to spend more.

Check your ceiling too. A treadmill deck adds several inches of height, and incline adds more at the front. Stand on it and make sure you have clearance with room to spare.

Benches, racks and everything else

  • Squat and power racks: check the overall height against your ceiling before you buy, and make sure the pull-up bar is high enough to hang with your knees bent.
  • Weight benches: on a short bench, long legs end up awkwardly placed. Lie on it and check that your feet plant flat.
  • Spin bikes: check the seat post’s maximum height against your inseam, just like a real bike.
