A hotel bed can make or ruin a trip if you’re tall. The good news: bed length is standardized, so once you know the sizes you can book the right room and ask for the right thing.
How long is a hotel bed?
US mattresses come in a handful of standard sizes. Length is what matters most.
| Size | Width × length |
|---|---|
| Twin | 38 × 75 in |
| Full / double | 53 × 75 in |
| Twin XL | 38 × 80 in |
| Queen | 60 × 80 in |
| King | 76 × 80 in |
| California king | 72 × 84 in |
Source: NCOA. Actual mattresses can run about half an inch shorter than nominal (industry sizes).
The key point: a queen and a king are the same length. A king gives you room to sleep diagonally, which helps, but only a California king adds length, about 4 extra inches.
A common rule of thumb is that a bed should be at least 6 inches longer than you are (NCOA). Use that to decide how much you care about the difference.
Avoid the full
Many older and budget hotels still use full (double) beds, which are only 75 inches long. If a booking says “double” or “two doubles,” assume it’s a full and pick a queen or king room instead.
Traveling in Europe
Europe uses metric sizes, and lengths vary by country. 200 cm (about 79 in) is the most common length, close to a US queen or king (industry sizes). Germany, Austria and the Netherlands typically use 200 cm. France, Italy and Spain often use 190 cm (about 75 in) for smaller beds, and parts of Scandinavia use 210 cm for some sizes (Nectar). Longer beds, 210 or 220 cm, usually exist only by special order.
In a 190 cm country, it’s worth emailing ahead.
How to ask for a longer bed
- Book a king room, not a double or queen.
- Ask in writing before you arrive. Say you need the longest bed available. Many hotels can arrange an extra-long mattress or a different room with notice (Hotelier’s Choice).
- Ask about the bed frame, not just the mattress. A long mattress in a frame with a footboard still stops your feet.
- At check-in, ask again. Front desks can sometimes swap rooms on the spot.
Footboards: the hidden problem
If a bed has no footboard, your feet can hang past the end of the mattress without hitting anything, which makes even a standard-length bed workable. A low footboard turns the same bed into a box (DutchCrafters). Hotel photos usually show the frame, so look before you book.
